Cancer can be defined as the consequence of the accumulation of mutations in two kinds of genes: proto-oncogenes and tumour suppressor genes. The key mechanism behind hereditary or familial cancer are mutations in these genes in a germinal cell that are therefore transmitted to the progeny.
When an individual inherits a mutation it will occur in all cells, and there will be a high probability that neoplasia will develop as a consequence. Between 5-10% of all tumours are of a hereditary type. Genes involved in this class of cancer have both a varying degree of penetrance and transmission. Clinical prevention and treatment, and study of such cancers demands individual risk analysis for each member belonging to the family in question - namely, genetic counselling.
This conference will deal with all these subjects related to familial cancer.
