Breast cancer
From the very beginning, ESO has devoted special attention to breast cancer, the most common cancer in women worldwide. Our founder Umberto Veronesi, dedicated much of his career towards breast cancer research and it is also the specialty research field of our CEO, Alberto Costa.
For the past 30 years, ESO has stressed, through many dedicated educational events and sessions, the crucial need for a multidisciplinary disease approach, encouraging the active involvement of patients.
ESO has also been a tireless activist for the establishment and accreditation of Breast Units all over Europe, aiming at substantially improving the outcomes of patients with both early and advanced breast cancer.
Our Collaborations and work in breast cancer
ESO has been instrumental in the establishment of EUSOMA (European Society of Breast specialists) and its first official journal, The Breast, the Breast Centres Network (formerly SenoNetwork) programme, as well as Europa Donna (the European Breast Cancer Coalition) and the Milan Breast Cancer Conference.
Over the years ESO developed and supported together with ESMO, both the International Consensus Conference for Advanced Breast Cancer (ABC) and the Breast Cancer in Young Women International Conference (BCY), held every 2 years to define the international consensus guidelines to manage patients in these challenging disease settings.
ESO established the ABC Global Alliance as a multi-stakeholder platform for all those interested in collaborating in common projects in Advanced Breast Cancer around the world. The Alliance, chaired by Dr. Fatima Cardoso from Lisbon, Portugal, is made up of individuals and organisations interested in ABC. The Alliance is dedicated to improving and extending the lives of women and men worldwide by actively fighting for a cure. Further information is available at www.abcglobalalliance.org.
Certificate of Competence in Breast Cancer
In co-operation with Ulm University, ESO has established the Certificate of Competence in Breast Cancer (CCB) Programme, an academically recognised curriculum of studies, developed with the contribution of internationally recognised physicians and scientists in the field.
