Ljubljana, Slovenia

COURSES AND SEMINARS

Oncology basics

Description

Chairs: A. Eniu, CH – F.A. Peccatori, IT

ESO is proposing a new comprehensive course for oncology trainees in Europe intended to bridge the gap in education between courses for students and ESO’s well-known Masterclasses. The course aims to provide orientation to the guiding principles of multidisciplinary oncological management and life as a modern oncologist.

Although some of the principles underlying oncology practice are similar to those in other branches of medicine, sub-specialisation has reduced the exposure of medical students and junior residents to oncological concepts and practice. New oncology trainees face a number of specific challenges. These include navigation of an extensive curriculum with no clear starting point, a rapidly evolving clinical landscape, and increasing clinical demands. During training, residents must also strategically plan their careers, manage any academic focus, and maintain a healthy work-life balance.

Learning Outcomes

  • Update on basic principles in etiology and epidemiology
  • Update on basic cancer genetics, staging and imaging
  • Update on basic surgical oncology and pathology
  • Update on basic radiology and chemotherapy
  • Intro to paediatric oncology
  • Intro to tumour board and patient issues: communication, supportive and palliative care
  • Intro to clinical trials and paper appraisal

CME ACCREDITATION

The Basic Principles of Oncology Course has been accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME) to provide the following CME activity for medical specialists. The EACCME is an institution of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS), www.uems.net.

It has been accredited by the European Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (EACCME®) for a maximum of 20 European CME credits (ECMEC®s).

Each medical specialist should claim only those credits that he/she actually spent in the educational activity.

The EACCME® is an institution of the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS), www.uems.eu

Through an agreement between the European Union of Medical Specialists and the American Medical Association, physicians may convert EACCME® credits to an equivalent number of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Information on the process to convert EACCME® credits to AMA credits can be found at www.ama-assn.org/education/earn-credit-participation-international-activities.

Live educational activities occurring outside of Canada, recognised by the UEMS-EACCME® for ECMEC® credits are deemed to be Accredited Group Learning Activities (Section 1) as defined by the Maintenance of Certification Program of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

PARTICIPATION

Attendance is limited to 80 participants and admittance is by competitive application only. Priority will be given to applicants who have attended an ESO-ESMO course for medical students or the ESO-ESSO-ESTRO course for medical students.

Successful applicants are granted free registration.
