Hospital overview

The Centre Leon Berard (CLB) of Lyon is a Comprehensive Cancer Centers, a private non-profit organization linked to the  University  Claude  Bernard  Lyon  I,  training medical students and doctors. The CLB is affiliated to Unicancer.

The  CLB hosts the Cancer research Center of Lyon (>600 researchers) in  4 building structures (>15000 m2), a Research Center (Cancer Research Center of Lyon (CRCL) with  state of the art sequencing  facilities, translational pathology and immunology, a  large biological resource center (>25000 samples), a Clinical Research Department running national and international clinical trials with over 2,000 patients in clinical trials.

CLB has 2,200 employees, 288 doctors, 315 beds + 215 beds  for homecare hospitalisation, 11 operating rooms,  linear accelerators, tomo & cyberknife, protonbeam therapy in Nice,  interventional radiology. Its national and international expertises includes breast cancer, rare cancers, gastrointestinal cancer, gynecological, thoracic cancer, hematology, urological cancers, head and neck cancer, oncogenetics, pediatric tumours, molecular and precision medecine of cancer, immunotherapy of cancer, & dedicated departments on supportive and palliative care and homecare.

The CLB participates to international consortia (WIN,GCIG,ICGC,SIOPe,EORTC), & rare cancer networks (Sarcoma,Ovarian, Mesothelioma, Pediatrics...), leading the  European Reference Network for Rare adult cancers ( EURACAN). CLB is supported by major national & international grants (FP6, FP7, H2020).

For Residency fellowships, doctors must be accepted by the Conseil de l’Ordre des Médecins du Rhône and be able to speak French.

 

CTC programmes offered

1. Training for the diagnosis and treatment of Sarcoma

Discipline:

Programme description:

This  program is designated  as a training for the management of  adult soft tissue , visceral and  bone  sarcomas. It  is intended  for medical oncologist, radiotherapist, surcoma  surgical oncologist,  sarcoma  biopathologist and moecular  biologists.

It will provide a multidisciplinary  training, participation to  the  MDTs, and  to the work  ofof the NETSARC+ network adapted to the need  of the applicant depending on its specialty:

  • Participation to the laboratory  and review work in the biopathology  department (Dr M. Karanian)
  • Participation to the laboratory work of the team of  Dr F. Tirode, in the cancer  Research Center of 
  • Participation to the outpatient clinic and surgery work of the  surgical department ( Pr F. Gouin)
  • Participation to the outpatient clinic and medical oncology of the  surgical department ( Pr )

2. Training for the diagnosis and external radiotherapy treatment of H&N, pediatric, lung and SNC tumor; training in brachytherapy of cervix and prostate tumors.

  • Clinical examination of patients including fiberoptic for H&N SCC

3. Standard of management & New insights for Gynaecological cancers

4. Management of Breast Imaging

Programme description: 
  • Educate in the advanced interpretation of mammography, breast ultrasound, breast MRI and in the accompanying image-guided biopsies.
  • Educate in the epidemiology, diagnosis, pathology and therapy of breast cancer including screening for breast cancer and identification patterns of recurrence of malignant breast tumors.
  • Provide an opportunity for participation in academic research.

5. Management of Interventional Oncology

Discipline:

Programme description: 
  • Expose to all facets of the practice of Interventional Radiology, with emphasis on clinical evaluation and patient management.
  • Training in clinical evaluation, non-procedural longitudinal patient management, peri-procedural care, and service/resource management.
  • to provide training for fully integrated inpatient and outpatient capabilities including IR admissions and consult service.
  • Vascular Interventions : Venous thrombolysis, stent deployment, IVC placement, Emergency Embolization.
  • Oncologic Interventions: Chemoembolization, Radioembolization, Percutaneous Ablations (Radiofrequency, Microwave, and Cryo ablations), Percutaneous biopsies, Drain placements.

6. Diagnostic Imaging Program on Oncology disease

Programme description:  
  • Educate trainees in the advanced interpretation of CT, MRI, and Ultrasound examination of the body and in the performance of ultrasound and CT guided procedures.
  • Educate trainees in the biology, treatment and recurrence patterns of malignant tumors, particularly as they are reflected in body imaging studies. In addition, to educate trainees in the epidemiology, diagnosis, pathology and therapy of cancer, including screening and identification patterns of recurrence of malignant tumors.
  • Provide an opportunity for academic research using the case material and resources of CL Bérard.

7. New drugs in hematological malignancies ( lymphoid malignancies, myelodysplasia and acute myeloid leukemia) and innovative  cellular therapy  ie CAR T cells malignacies

  • Dedicated programs of new drugs in CLL and NHL
  • Place of the new combination treatment using new drugs + chemotherpy in myelodysplasia and acute myeloid leukemia specifically in older population
  • Developement of CAR T cells  in NHL, HD and CLL in clinical trials or in academic use
  • Developement of CAR T cells in rare oncologic tumors
  • Standard management of hematological malignancies ( NHL, HD, Myeloma, CLL, MDS)

8. Standard of management and new drugs in genito-urinary (GU) cancer ( germ cell tumor, prostate cancer: HSPC, mCRPC, CRPC M0, metastatic bladder cancer and perioperative treatment, renal cell carcinoma)

9. Training in thoracic oncology for the multidisciplinary management of non-small cell lung cancer, small cell lung cancer and rare thoracic tumours

  • Mediastinal staging of lung cancer with EBUS

  • Management of SCLC, including new therapies
  • Education to the management of rare thoracic tumours
  • Management of patients in clinical trials
  • Opportunity to participate into translational research

10. Training for the management of early breast cancer patients and therapeutic strategies based on molecular profiling for metastatic breast cancer patients
