ESO and SIOP Europe's joint Fellowship Programme is for young paediatric haematologists and oncologists to advance their clinical experience at renowned centres across Europe.
The programme supports young and promising paediatric oncologists in their education and career development in cancer care. The training familiarises the trainees with all diseases of paediatric haematology and oncology and instructs them in diagnostics and therapy. The programme gives oncologists of the future the opportunity to spend 3 to 6 months at a Centre of Excellence in Europe. They will grow their knowledge in paediatric haematology and oncology and experience a multi-disciplinary clinical setting specifically designed to address their goals. It is also expected that participants will acquire expertise in all issues dealing with the running of a successful cancer unit, including hospital management issues such as quality control.
Being selected to take part in an ESO CTC Fellowship automatically makes you eligible to enrol in the College of the European School of Oncology (ESCO). Enrolling in ESCO gives you access to advanced career resources and opportunities to build meaningful networks. Find out more about ESCO benefits or how to join.
Selected applicants for the ESO – SIOP Europe Clinical Training Centres Fellowship Programme who have successfully passed their 3 to 6 months stay at the host institution are strongly supported in applying for the upcoming 3-year SIOP Europe Course in Paediatric Haematology and Oncology as a further part of your education in the field.
The following are some of the direct education experiences that are available to the selected candidates. They are divided into clinical teaching activities common in all cancer subtypes, as well as those specific to the different cancer subtypes.
Trainees will become an integrated member of the specific cancer team to which they are attached. As a trainee, you will have the opportunity to attend the following: daily rounds (joint rounds with the area-leading specialist / senior physicians), weekly multi-disciplinary meetings such as tumour boards or disease-specific reference boards, radiology conferences, pathology conferences, post-mortem conferences, case conferences and educational sessions including both overviews and case presentations.
In addition, you may attend weekly meetings of the affiliated research institutions, outpatient clinics, and local/regional/national cancer meetings or conferences taking place during your period of visit.
You will be educated in the management of a patient from the very beginning, including collecting medical histories, examination of inpatient or outpatient patients, preparation of therapy suggestions, performing diagnostic procedures (e.g., lumbar or bone marrow punctures, skin biopsies, etc.), evaluation of peripheral blood and bone marrow smears, assessment and interpretation of collected findings, planning of evidence-based therapy according to published scientific literature, therapy optimization studies, existing guidelines or house standards, conversation with patients and parents, as well as the preparation of patient letters and discharge management.
An important element of the training is the completion of night shifts to which you are invited to take part and work under supervision of the attending senior physician.
As well as the above, as a trainee you will be exposed to the clinical activity specific to your specialty and site-specific interest. As such, a tailor-made programme will be developed for each candidate to meet their educational goals. Usually, the candidate may choose between malignant haematology (leukaemia and lymphoma), solid tumours and neuro-oncology.
It will be possible to discuss with each selected candidate what mix of the above suits their particular needs the best. In order to gain a true insight into multi-disciplinary care it is also encouraged that you spend a limited period of exposure in the other specialties. For example: at the department of paediatric surgery, radiology or psycho-oncology.
Trainees can be enrolled at the host institution with a visiting observer status (3 - 6 months) or a visiting practitioner status (6 months only). The enrolment procedure is to be discussed directly with the host institution. However, please be informed that obtaining residency status may take up to 6 months.
Visiting observership status - Direct contact with patients is not foreseen. The host institution will relate with you regarding enrolment procedure.
Visiting residency status - The visiting residency status allows you as the trainee to have direct contact with patients. The enrolment procedure for practitioners varies for each Clinical Training Centre.
Depending on the Centre and the knowledge and training level of the applicants, all activities are initially carried out by the trainee in direct supervision, and later in indirect supervision by the area-leading specialist / senior physician.
3 or 6 months, depending on the educational programme selected.
ESO will refund travel costs (economy fare, from location of residence to the location of the training centre and return) and a grant of:
EUR 2.000 gross per month
