COURSES AND SEMINARS
Description
In 2008 the European School of Oncology (ESO) and the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO) are launching a three days, advanced intensive residential course on “Improving clinical skills in early breast cancer “ as a joint venture. The challenge of the programme is to facilitate the creation of a group of European-minded senologists; young breast surgeons who will be specifically and almost exclusively dedicated to breast cancer. This full immersion educational event will cover all aspects from epidemiology, screening, primary and secondary prevention, risk assessment, genetic counselling, molecular-biology, diagnostic procedures, interdisciplinary treatment modalities, rehabilitation, palliative care, special clinical situations, to psycho-oncological skills in the management of breast cancer. In addition, an essential part is to promote to participants the importance of controlled randomised trials in clinical oncology, multidisciplinary management and breast units, and patients advocacy. In mediating knowledge and principles in this way, we hope to create a collective spirit of teaching and learning. The residential course has been organised in collaboration with the Institute of Oncology in Ljubljana.
One month training in a European Breast Unit
The European School of Oncology is pleased to assist participants who are interested to work on voluntary basis for a one month period in a European Breast Unit to identify a centre via the SenoNetwork programme and facilitate allocation.
In 2006 the European School of Oncology has given an important contribute to the establishment of SenoNetwork (http://www.senonetwork.org/), the first international network of clinical centres exclusively dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer. These centres are called "breast units" and in Europe they are defined according to the guidelines of the European Society of Mastology. Breast units are also recommended by the European Parliament and by Europa Donna, the European Breast Cancer Coalition. SenoNetwork's mission is to develop synergies among breast units, to assist doctors and nurses working in the field and to help breast cancer patients and their care givers find the right place to be looked after or to have a second opinion.
