CONFERENCE

Prostate cancer

Description

BACKGROUND AND SCOPE
Over the past 10 years the development of sophisticated mathematical predicting models of
tumour variables and of response to antineoplastic therapies has received a great deal of
attention from the Uro-Oncologic Community.

In particular, predictive modeling in prostate cancer has recently been object of an increasing
interest, especially considering the growing knowledge of epidemiologic, biomolecular, pathologic
and clinical characteristics of prostate cancer.

From the first probability formula to estimating the risk of positive lymph-node metastases
developed at Stanford University in 1988 to the prediction of T and N pathologic stages for
surgery in 1993 (risk of extracapsular disease, seminal vesicle invasion, lymph-node invasion),
more than 60 previsional models have been developed.

Topics during this conference are predictive models in prostate cancer refering to:
- genomic and biomolecular sciences
- histopathology and systems pathology
- diagnosis
- indolent tumour
- surgery
- radiotherapy (external irradiation and brachytherapy)
- medical oncology
- palliative care
- toxicity in surgery
- toxicity in radiotherapy
- andrology
- long term survival

These models, originally based on statistical systems, are evolving towards extremely
sophisticated tools derived from engineering, astrophysics and meteorology and to the use of
neural networks and genetic algorithms, Bayesian previsions and propensity scoring, although in
the current state of the art nomograms appear to be more user friendly and show a higher
predictive accuracy and better performance characteristics when compared to other tools.
This innovative meeting, the first international event on this topic, is aimed at defining the state of
the art of predictive modeling and determining the future research trends of the Uro-Oncologic
Community.

TARGET AUDIENCE
Medical Doctors specialized in Urology, Radiation Oncology, Clinical Oncology, Histopathology, and
Palliative Care. Medical Physicists.
