Fast-paced technological advancements, increasing patient needs and scarce resources make the European Health System more complex and more demanding every day. Medical Experts (ME) have to combine up-to-date scientific and clinical knowledge with managerial skills that will allow them to drive multidisciplinary teams and organizations successfully. Typically, ME’s do not receive managerial and leadership skills training as part of their regular (post) graduate curriculum despite being highly aware of the importance of such skills.

The POLE programme has been developed by SDA Bocconi School of Management with an unrestricted grant from Novartis and is recommended by ESO. The programme will be delivered at SDA Bocconi in Milan, Italy by a pool of highly professional and renowned international professors. The programme will comprise of 15 days of training organized into five modules which will run through 2014 and 2015.

Admission to the programme is by competitive application only and is limited to 14 participants. Successful applicants will be granted free registration, support for travel and hotel accommodation.

Participants who successfully complete all modules of the programme will receive a certificate of attendance issued by ESO and SDA Bocconi. Please note that the programme does not qualify for CME.

Module 1: European Health Care Systems and Policies, 9-11 May, 2014
Rationale: develop a clear understanding of health care systems and policy in Europe
The module introduces major issues and methods to analyze and compare health care systems in Europe. After successful completion of the three days, professionals are expected to understand the main funding, reimbursement and institutional models of healthcare systems in Europe and to appreciate the value creation approach to the analysis of systems.  Also key issues and trends in health policy across Europe will be discussed.
Learning format:
• Class discussion and interaction
• International guest speakers on comparative healthcare systems analysis, as well as the role of EU in policy making

2.Module 2: Medical leadership: leading self, 20-22 June 2014
Rationale: gain and reinforce leadership competency and strengthen communication skills
This module will address the participant’s personal leadership style. This will include the understanding of individual performance and its determinants, motivation and communication. In fact, in the healthcare management scenario today top management roles are indeed a compendium of these skills.
Learning format:
• Peer coaching and instructor coaching
• Situational leadership self testing tool
• Management games to address problem solving
• Two way communication model experiment
3.Module 3: Medical leadership: leading others, 19-21 September 2014
Rationale: develop knowledge and training on how to enhance the capabilities of individual and teams contributors
This module will stretch and widen the oncologists’ role among other professionals. It will enhance participant’s effectiveness in managing peer to peer relationships and it will develop the oncologist’s ability to manage and measure people’s performance and development.
Learning format:
• Management games to address conflict management and negotiation
• Power of observation exercise
• Multidisciplinary teams and diversity management
Module 4: Leading organizations, 21-23 November 2014
Rationale: address fundamentals to manage organizations in rapidly changing environment
This module will highlight the most challenging areas in creating innovation and change management culture. These require the adaptation of management behaviour (i.e. planning and leadership) and practices (organizing and controlling). Participants who complete the module will leave with a broader understanding of how to handle the complexities in managing their own organization.
Learning format:
• International guest speakers  and case discussion on Cancer Centres or network forms of organization
• Case study presentation on monitoring and evaluating performance

Module 5: Health economics and HTA, 6-8 February 2015
Rationale: develop knowledge on economic evaluation and health technology assessment in healthcare
Managing healthcare services takes more than clinical expertise as it increasingly requires a broader understanding of health economics. Participants will discuss logics and techniques of economic evaluation analysis as a tool to assess technological innovations in oncology, and the role of HTA in healthcare decision making.
