The ESO College Council is managed by the ESO College leadership team and plays a key role in guiding the development of the College’s activities and priorities.

It is composed of 8 members elected by their peers among ESO College members, with the aim of ensuring strong community representation and active contribution to ESO’s mission.

What does the Council do?

Council responsibilities:

  • College Governance: Review and help shape ESO College strategy and operations.
  • Development of new initiatives: Identify gaps and propose new programmes, services, and events.
  • Representation: Act as a voice for the broader student community across ESO College.
  • Event involvement: Contribute to the organisation of College-wide and regional networking activities.


Meeting format:

  • 1 in-person meeting per year.
  • 4 virtual meetings in the first year; frequency reviewed for year two.

College working groups

To support targeted development across key areas, the Council leads four dedicated Working Groups, each co-chaired by 2 Council members and supported by 4 ESO College members.

These groups ensure that strategic planning, education, career services, and membership remain dynamic and responsive to members’ needs.

Education Working Group

Responsible for enhancing ESO College’s educational offer:

  • Evaluate existing member benefits
  • Curate and develop future distance learning Sessions
  • Organise the College Writing Contest
  • Explore options for micro-credentials and educational accreditation

Membership Working Group

Dedicated to growing and engaging the ESO College community:

  • Review eligibility and membership processes.
  • Boost outreach and communications.
  • Support retention and engagement of current members.

Strategy Working Group

Focused on long-term planning and innovation:

  • Refine the College’s strategic goals.
  • Set measurable objectives.
  • Propose new directions aligned with ESO’s broader mission.

Career Development Working Group

Committed to advancing members’ professional growth:

  • Expand the Mentorship Programme.
  • Create career support tools and resources.
  • Enable new networking opportunities.
