The Christie NHS Foundation Trust is the largest single site cancer centre in Europe, seeing over 60,000 patients per year. The Christie delivers ~100,000 SACT treatments per year, ~100,000 radiotherapy treatments per year, and is a centre for complex cancer surgeries. The Trust is highly research active with over 800 clinical studies ongoing at any one time. Medical, Clinical, and Surgical Oncology consultants work closely together in site-specialised Disease Orientated Groups. They are actively involved in research in joint collaborative programmes in the fields of lymphomas, sarcomas, melanoma, leukaemia, lung, breast, ovary, renal, testis, upper and lower gastrointestinal cancer, and others. The Christie became a Foundation Trust in 2007 and serves both the local population across Greater Manchester and Cheshire of 3.2 million people and patients referred from across the UK.
The Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC) was formed in 2006 by The University of Manchester, Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and The Christie. The CRUK Manchester Institute is at the heart of the MCRC and forms the basic and discovery science engine of the MCRC alongside basic and translational scientists in the University’s Division of Cancer Sciences. The MCRC brings together basic, translational and clinical researchers to provide a more integrated approach which is essential to turn findings in the laboratory into more effective treatments for patients with cancer. Clinicians and scientists are co-located on the hospital site to optimise translation and stimulate collaborations. The new Paterson research building was opened in April 2024, and houses over 700 research staff from across the MCRC partnership who are directly linked into The Christie.
The Christie has its own Institute for Cancer Education, enhancing the education and knowledge of healthcare professionals internally as well as across the country and internationally.
The Christie will only accept ‘Residency’ status fellows. This means that GMC accreditation is required. Please view the process necessary for this before applying for an ESO CTC at this centre – https://www.gmc-uk.org/
